How to overcome resistance and get out of your own way [Leader Reader]

The Leader Reader is a video series where each month I feature a book that can transform your life. I love to read. I firmly believe that leaders are reader and that a book can impact you life.

This month’s featured book is a little one that packs and impressive punch. It’s a book that I have been resisting reading for awhile now. Several people have told me that I need to read this book, but I never did. In February I attended a conference with Michael Hyatt and he gave me a copy. I finally read it and was kicking myself for not reading it sooner.

The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform your Life Before 8am [Leader Reader]

The Miracle Morning journal is this week’s featured Leader Reader book. The author Hal Elrod lays out a structure for creating a morning routine.

Why should you care?

Having a morning routine that focuses on your growth is a great way to energize you, make you more productive, and lead to you creating a Level 10 life.

Hal was a guest on the Ninja Leaders Podcast a few weeks ago and we walked through the The Miracle Morning book. But I just went through this journal for the first time, it is a great tool for starting your year off on the right foot.

The first part of the journal breaks down the main concepts of The Miracle Morning, the Life SAVERS:

S – Silence Take ten minutes first thing in the morning to sit quietly. Meditate, pray, or I prefer to simply sit, sipping my coffee, doing my best to clear my mind of any thoughts. It sounds silly but it has been the best thing I’ve added to my routine in a long time.

Fish: A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results [Leader Reader]

In this week’s Leader Reader we are talking about the book Fish! A Proven Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results by Stephen Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christenson.

Youth Leadership Speaker - Nick Palkowski

Fish is a story of the world famous Pike’s Place Fish Market. Mary Jane, the main character in this story discovers this fish market for the first time when she goes for a walk during lunch to get away from the toxic energy of her workplace.

Pike’s Place is filled with a completely different kind of energy.

Fish are flying through the air. There’s a group of employees having fun and engaging with the people around them. There’s even a crowd of people gathering around just to watch them work. People are laughing and enjoying the whole experience.

Through a mentor named Lonnie, Mary Jane begins to learn the secrets behind Pike’s Place. How they turned the smelly, slimy business of selling fish into the world famous Pike’s Place fish market.

Fish describes her journey of discovering these secrets and implements them into her work environment. It’s really the story of transformation, of taking an organization from ordinary to extraordinary.

The most valuable gift [Leader Reader]

With today being Christmas eve I had to feature this Leader Reader book, The Present: The Gift That Makes You Happier and More Successful at Work and in Life, Today!

The Present - Nick Palkowski Youth Speaker

I’ve read several of Dr. Spencer Johnson’s books and I always enjoy them. In fact, a few of them I couldn’t put down and read in just one sitting. His books are easy to read, very engaging stories that drive home important leadership lessons and The Present is no different.

The story of The Present is a story of a young man who goes in search of the most valuable gift, the present. I’m sure you realize that we are not talking, about a present that comes wrapped in brightly colored paper with a bow. We are talking about the present, as in right here right now. As is the most valuable gift you have.

The Present helps you concentrate better on what you are doing, learn more from what happens to you and it helps you plan better.

The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy

This week’s Leader Reader featured book is The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy.

Student Leadership Speaker - Nick Palkowski

I love books. I do lots of reading and believe that different books serve different purposes, some expose you to new ideas, some expand your thinking, some motivate and others kick you in the pants. This is what The Compound Effect does.

It’s down to earth. It’s practical. It’s a time to get your butt in gear type of book.

If all we needed was more information, everyone with an internet connection would live in a mansion, have abs of steel, and be blissfully happy. New or more information is not what you need – a new plan of action is.

The premise is summed up well in a formula Darren gives Small, Smart Choices + Consistency + Time = Radical Difference.

Habitudes: The Art of Self-Leadership

Leader Reader #1

Welcome to the first episode of Leader Reader the series were I review and highlight books I’ve read and explain how the ideas contained in those books relate to you, a student leader.

Habitudes: The Art of Self-Leadership by Dr. Tim Elmore

In this first episode we look at one of my favorite books, Habitudes by Dr. Tim Elmore. This book gives some of the best illustration of value based traits of a leader. Not only are these traits essential for a solid leadership foundation but they are very sticky images that are easily remembered.

The book contains 13 Habitudes. All thirteen are rock stars but here are two that relate directly to this months theme of growth.

Leaders are readers

Leaders are growth conscious. Leaders are intentional. Leaders look to improve themselves.

Leaders are readers

I love books. There is just something about turning the page and discovering new ideas. For me reading is an active sport. A highlighting, dog earring, margin scribbling sport.

In the above video, I explain a new weekly series where review and highlight books that I have read and explain how the ideas in those books relate to you a student leader. I’m calling it the…

Leader Reader

Every week I will choose one book relating to our monthly theme to review. It kicks off next week. Read on.
