With today being Christmas eve I had to feature this Leader Reader book, The Present: The Gift That Makes You Happier and More Successful at Work and in Life, Today!
I’ve read several of Dr. Spencer Johnson’s books and I always enjoy them. In fact, a few of them I couldn’t put down and read in just one sitting. His books are easy to read, very engaging stories that drive home important leadership lessons and The Present is no different.
The story of The Present is a story of a young man who goes in search of the most valuable gift, the present. I’m sure you realize that we are not talking, about a present that comes wrapped in brightly colored paper with a bow. We are talking about the present, as in right here right now. As is the most valuable gift you have.
The Present helps you concentrate better on what you are doing, learn more from what happens to you and it helps you plan better.
Right now, you are probably thinking, ok I get it, be in the moment. Sounds great.
But there really is more to it and even if you understand the importance chances are you are not fully present. We knew how to be present when we were younger, but with years of busyness, with the successes and failures, we have forgotten.
This book is about becoming fully engaged in the moment. Not thinking about the past. Not thinking about the future. But this precise moment.
I like the fact that this book comes with a reminder card. On the card are the three main lessons from the book.
Be in the Moment
When you want to be happier and more successful you need to Focus on what is right now. Respond to what is important now.
Learn from the Past
Do this when you want to make the present better than the past. Look at what happened in the past, learn something valuable from it and use that knowledge to do things differently now.
Plan for the Future
When you want to make the future better than the present. Envision what a wonderful future would look like. Make plans to help make it happen and take action now.
That is the book The Present. I highly suggest this Christmas eve you give yourself the gift of the present.
